Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 16, 2026

1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy describes how AirExtend (“the Application”, “we”, “us”), made by 278labs, handles information when you use the Mac app, the iPhone and iPad app and the web player that the Mac app serves. By downloading, installing or using the Application, you agree to this policy.

2. How the Application works

AirExtend runs on your Mac and streams sound, and optionally the screen, to your other devices over your local network. Your devices connect to the Mac directly. There is no AirExtend server, cloud service or account in between.

3. What the Application accesses

Audio. The Application reads the sound your Mac plays, either the whole Mac or the apps you pick, to send it to the devices you paired. The Mac’s microphone is used for a few seconds during Auto-sync, to measure how late each device sounds. Nothing is recorded or stored.

Screen. If you allow Screen Recording, the Application sends the screen, or the picked apps, to the devices you paired.

Phone microphone. If you turn the phone’s microphone on, its sound is sent to the Mac as the AirExtend Mic input, and nowhere else.

Local network. The Application finds and talks to your devices on your local network. It uses Bonjour to advertise the Mac under a name such as airextend.local.

Camera on iPhone. The iPhone app uses the camera only to scan the pairing QR code. No picture is saved.

4. What the Application stores on your devices

On the Mac: a local certificate and key for HTTPS, a pairing key, the list of paired devices with the dates they were paired and last seen, each device’s delay correction, your settings and a log file. On the iPhone: the Mac’s address and the pairing credential. This stays on your devices. You can delete it by removing the Application and its files.

5. Information we do not collect

The Application does not collect, transmit or have access to personal information. It sends nothing to 278labs or to third parties, and makes no network requests of its own outside your local network. It contains no analytics, advertising or tracking SDK.

6. The pairing link and this website

The QR code in the Mac app encodes a link on airextend.278labs.co.uk. The direct address and the pairing token are in the part of the link after the # sign, which a browser never sends to the server, so this website does not receive them. The page then opens your Mac’s address on your local network, and only if it is a private network address.

This website does not use analytics or cookies. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes standard request data such as IP addresses to deliver the site and keep it secure, under its own privacy policy.

7. Security

A device must be paired with the QR code or a six-digit code that changes every ten minutes, and wrong guesses are rate limited. A paired device keeps a signed credential in the browser or the app. You can turn on Open access in the Mac app, which removes the pairing step; anyone on the same network can then connect, listen, see the screen and use the phone microphone. Leave it off on networks you do not trust.

8. Children’s privacy

The Application is not directed at children under the age of 13, and the developer does not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

9. Your rights

Because the developer does not collect or store personal data about you, there is no developer-held data to access, correct or delete. For users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and California: the developer is not a controller or processor of your data from the Application and does not sell or share personal information.

10. Changes to this policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by an updated effective date at the top of this page.

11. Contact
